General Information
History: The Department of Nutrition and Dietetics started its educational activities in 2021 under the Faculty of Health Sciences at Iğdır University.
Program Outcomes:
Gains theoretical and practical knowledge of fundamental, field-specific, and social courses required for the profession of dietetics in the field of Nutrition and Dietetics.
Recognizes problems encountered in the field of Nutrition and Dietetics and uses appropriate technology and evidence-based knowledge to solve them.
Acquires the ability to design experiments, conduct research, undertake projects and fieldwork using appropriate methods, collect data, analyze it, and report results in the field of Nutrition and Dietetics.
Takes responsibility for developing nutrition policies aimed at preventing diseases, using the professional skills acquired for the health of individuals and society at every stage of life.
Works with other disciplines in the field on national and international platforms, employing effective communication skills within the scope of individual and/or team work.
Provides nutritional education, counseling, and medical nutrition therapy to patients or healthy groups, developing nutrition recommendations.
Acts with awareness of the individual, social, and universal impacts and legal consequences of Nutrition and Dietetics practices, adhering to professional ethical principles.
Language/Type of Education: The program duration is 8 semesters, and the language of instruction is Turkish.
Infrastructure Facilities: The Nutrition and Dietetics Department's educational program consists of theoretical and practical courses in accordance with the Higher Education Institution’s Core Education Program (CEP) for Nutrition and Dietetics. The first three years include theoretical and practical courses aimed at building a professional foundation. In the first year, courses in basic medical sciences (anatomy, physiology, medical biology, and genetics) are provided to establish a basis for field-related courses in subsequent years. In addition to a summer internship at the end of the third year, practical training is conducted in various hospitals, institutions, and organizations during the final year.

Double Major/Minor Program
Double Major: Provides students with the opportunity to earn a bachelor's degree in another field of interest in addition to their main field of study. In this program, students complete the coursework for two different departments and receive diplomas in both fields.
Minor Program: Allows students to take a certain number of courses in another area of interest outside their primary major. Students who complete the minor program are awarded an official certificate in that field; however, this does not equate to a second bachelor's degree.

Exchange Programs
It offers students the opportunity to study at another university, either domestically or abroad, for a certain period. Through these programs, students have the chance to experience different cultures, improve their foreign language skills, and gain international academic experience. The most common exchange programs include Erasmus+, Mevlana, and Farabi.

Career
Purpose/Objectives of the Department: The aim is to train qualified “Dietitians” who are competent in their field, adhere to Atatürk’s principles and reforms, possess universal values and thinking, and meet the qualifications defined by international standards. The focus is on protecting, improving, and enhancing the health and quality of life of society through adequate and balanced nutrition throughout life.
Current Status and Future of the Department: The Nutrition and Dietetics Department continues its educational activities with 2 professors, 1 associate professor, 1 assistant professor, 2 lecturers, and 1 research assistant.
Professions Under This Field: The Nutrition and Dietetics Department is involved in planning and conducting practices and research in areas such as assessing the nutritional status of the community, identifying and evaluating issues and priorities, seeking and proposing solutions to improve the country's nutritional status, determining the country’s food and nutrition policies, conducting food analyses, identifying nutritional needs for different age groups, designing and implementing disease-specific diets, and managing and organizing meal services in institutions that provide mass nutrition services. Professions in this field that can be pursued by specializing in various sectors include:
Clinical Dietitian: Works in hospitals and clinics, preparing and implementing nutrition plans for patients during their treatment process. Works one-on-one with patients in conditions that require special diets, such as diabetes, heart diseases, and cancer. Public Health Dietitian: Works in community health centers and public health projects to protect and improve the health of large communities. Organizes education and projects related to healthy living and disease prevention.
Sports Nutritionist: Prepares diet plans and nutrition programs specifically designed for athletes to enhance their performance and maintain their health. Often collaborates with sports clubs, gyms, or federations.
Pediatric Dietitian: Focuses on the nutritional needs of infants, children, and adolescents. Can work in children's hospitals, private clinics, or counseling centers.
Geriatric Dietitian: Focuses on the nutritional needs of elderly individuals. Designs nutrition plans to address health issues associated with aging and aims to improve quality of life. Can work in care centers.
Oncology Dietitian: Prepares nutrition plans tailored to the treatment process of cancer patients. Deals with conditions such as weight loss and loss of appetite due to treatment, and designs programs to support patients' immune systems.
Academician: Works as a faculty member at universities, teaching courses related to nutrition science. Also conducts scientific research in their field and publishes findings.
Employment Opportunities: Graduates of the Nutrition and Dietetics Department have numerous employment opportunities in various fields. Some of these areas include inpatient treatment institutions, renal care units, diabetes education centers, enteral-parenteral nutrition teams, private nutrition and diet centers, mass nutrition systems (such as nurseries, schools, food factories, hotel food and beverage services, etc.), the food industry, private or public organizations related to food and nutrition, maternal and child health centers, family health centers, elderly care centers, sports centers, as well as educational and research institutions.
